Tar and Gravel Roofing

There are so many different types of roofing material out there it can be frustrating to choose the one you want to use. Have you considered using Tar and Gravel to roof your home? Tar and Gravel can be found on most commercial buildings and on residential contemporary homes as well. This style of roofing is more commonly done on homes and buildings that have low slopes. These types of roofs are called build up roofs. The Tar and Gravel is basically layers of asphalt and tar paper that come together on the surface of the roof and it is covered with a very hot asphalt application.

The layers of the Tar are actually laminated and then they are covered with the Gravel, this will help protect against the UV rays of the sun. Often the gravel gets stuck in the hot asphalt and some of it will stay loose on the roof floor. The life span of a Tar and Gravel Roof is just a mere 10 to 20 years.  These roofs are very strong but the application isn't done correctly then leaks can form since the gravel needs to be able to move around during all of the seasons of the year. There are some downsides to the Tar and Gravel Roof they are:

 

  • Leaks can be found near Flashings, Chimneys and Eaves
  • Wind can actually blow away enough of the gravel and that leaves the roof exposed to the heat of the sun as well as cold of the winter.
  • Tar and Gravel leaks do not handle many layers well, so if you have an existing tar and gravel roof, it is not recommended that you add any more layers to them.
